Growing up in the Elder Mountains, Cal tends to his garden and sells his flowers at the village market. One morning, Cal and his best friend adventure too far into the Deep Roots and attract a haint, a spirit who takes the form of an animal. After the dangerous encounter, Cal is visited by the mountain spirit who bestows a gift onto Cal.

After their village is threatened and their kin escapes into the mountains, Cal and his best friend embark on an adventure across the continent to save their village. Never having left the mountains, they travel to new lands and discover that not all spirits govern equally and not all people share their value of Kin.
