Chapter One
Natalie
The morning sun streamed through my bedroom curtains, casting a warm, golden glow on the walls. Blinking myself awake, the reality of the past few months flooded back into my consciousness. The "Your Soulmate" app had taken our college campus by storm, and Carmen, my best friend, was living proof of its seemingly magical matchmaking abilities.
As I sighed with exasperation, memories of Carmen's whirlwind romance with Richard Fleming, her supposed soulmate according to the app, flooded my mind. While Carmen saw their connection as fateful, my skeptical heart insisted it was nothing more than a striking coincidence.
Today marked a milestone for Carmen and Richard. They had decided to take the plunge and move in together, an event she had eagerly shared with me the night before. As I contemplated her announcement, my phone buzzed, reminding me of a text message.
It was from Carmen.
'Hey Nat! Can you believe it's finally happening? I'm moving in with Richard today!'
I couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm, even though the butterflies in my stomach were threatening to take flight. With a deep breath, I typed a quick response.
'That's amazing, Carmen! I'm so happy for you both. Make sure you keep me updated on how it goes.'
As I hit send, I found myself torn between genuine happiness for Carmen and my lingering doubts about the app's accuracy. Could a smartphone really predict the person you were meant to spend your life with? It seemed preposterous, but Carmen's unwavering faith in it was unyielding.
With curiosity piqued, I wondered what the day held for her and what, if anything, it meant for our friendship. Little did I know that the events that lay ahead would challenge my skepticism in ways I couldn't yet imagine.
Just as I was about to get up, my phone pinged with another message from Carmen. I picked it up and read her message, my eyes widening in surprise.
