The novel opens in Scotland in the ninth century, where a young boy happens upon great magical powers. In an attempt to save his clan, he sacrifices his life to create a refuge for his people, a realm called Terramon.

The story fast forwards some 1200 years later to modern-day America, where the Campbell siblings, Alex, Rosalyn, and Rowena, are living ordinary lives. After an unusual trip to Scotland, they learn their true identities from a young queen, Rane White. They are children of Evenara's mighty Queen's Guard.

The siblings return to what was once their home to take up their duties, only to uncover a dark betrayal that alters the course of one of their lives. Amid their training, Alex falls for the beautiful Queen, while Rosalyn attempts to suppress her growing attraction for Kallon, another member of the Guard. The members of the Guard must overcome loss and deception, as well as romantic distractions, as they train to fulfill their Blood Right and defeat Kerres the Gray, the fallen king banished for killing his own sister.
