He learns that while most people have some minor magical ability, the deeper magic requires the facilitation of a familiar, a daemon bound to a mortal body, able to navigate the spiritual world. But when Luos attempts the rite himself by summoning the daemon Asmod, proving to his teacher his capability in the occult, the daemon he binds besets the boy with a horrible truth. Daemons are not merely bound spirits. They are copies of the mage's own soul. When Alex's best friend and former partner dies unexpectedly, he's left with plenty inherit. There's a house, a pile of old gadgets, and plenty of books. Oh, and a niece he's never met, who he has to take as an apprentice and serve as her guide to the world of the Weird. Note: This is a first manuscript, and the first completed draft at that. It hasn't been fully edited, and there are a few structural tweaks I'm still mulling over. Consider this a beta more than a full release candidate.
