Genya and Sanemi have a very twisted relationship. Genya does whatever he can to get closer to the hashira rank and earn back the respect of his older brother, and apologize.
Sanemi just wants genya to leave the corps. He doesn't want his last family member putting his life in danger. just to what? Get stronger?
All the harsh words Sanemi Speaks towards genya is just to discourage him to leave.
Completely regardless of either of their mental health's.

Sanemi and Giyuu are already dating and Sabito is still alive and is Giyuu's best friend. Sanemi is 17 and his family except Genya is dead. Giyuu is 16 years old, his sister died protecting him. Sabito is 15 and was abandoned by his parents. Sanemi goes out to get some supplies for himself, Giyuu, and Sabito. He wasn't expecting what is going to happen when he comes home.
