when marie and kate go on their first holiday together, having been friends since practically before birth, they visit the national library of greece. it's not all they thought it'd be, until just outside the exit, some of the floor has been broken up by a storm just days before, and Marie loses her footing. she lands in a basement with old and rejected books, but one of them in particular catches her attention; a black book with golden letters and a red sigil. it opens in her hands as soon as she picks it up. where the girls may not have believed in magic before, the book leads them on a with hunt along greece, where their holiday rapidly changes into a beautiful adventure filled with things that seem impossible... and someone on their heels the entire time. someone who wants the book.

Jemma, a young Pakistan girl with hyperacusis and her father's slave Saskia with low vision and a stutter must flee Jemma's soon to be abusive husband and somehow avoid noise traveling to Europe. But along the way the girls discover a feral child, learn that they have magical abilities, and that they are from another planet. Will the girls find their way home? This book is for grades 6-9 because of violence and strong language. This is a powerful novel that combines sci-fi, real life events, scientific theories, friendship, disabilities, romance, magic, and family all into one. It also shows the power of the mind to manifest anything. It is about perseverance endurance kindness and finding yourself. It shows that through the darkest time as long as you keep hope you can accomplish your dreams. It also uses a metaphors to represent the injustice in the world and that we have to fight to abolish to be treated fairly. This is a heart wrenching novel filled with pain and sadness but at its heart this book is about the magic that lives inside everyone. I also wrote this book to make people more aware of the disorders and disabilities that a lot of people face. The disorders and disabilities that the girls in this book have I also suffer from myself and I feel that the public should be more aware of these conditions.
