Alex, an 18th-century Parisian girl, has only one way to survive in her world of misery : steal and sell works of art. 
But one day, she finds an abandoned painting in a garbage dump, portraying a spectrally pale lady. 
Could it be a stroke of luck? Or a dreadful stroke of bad luck? After all, this painting has a terrible past, and Alex is probably not strong enough to resist its temptations...
