The Council Guardians, series Book One

Paths of Fire follows the tale of Elyna, a hybrid woman serving as a guardian for The Council, a coalition of sentient beings dedicated to the eradication of slavers throughout the 'unified' galactic alliance. Gifted with powers to call forth portal fires from her hands, Elyna grapples with dueling desires: to use her aberrant powers for good, or to be accepted and loved. Bitter experience tells her that it cannot always be both.

The Council Guardians is a series dedicated to showcasing how the idea of choice slots into reality. Where mere Earth-bound mortals are oftentimes beset with situations where choices appear to be few in number, we can however choose how we meet the various aspects of our respective realities: head-on or fearfully, tactically or brashly, informed or with ignorance... or-more likely- a mixture of all in various percentages.

Original story and cover art concepts by Katerin Pareaux.

Rated Mature (MA) for sexual content, language, violence, alcohol references, slavery references, death and intense situations.

Dr. Zoey Ek was a top secret operative-in-training for the enigmatic Council Supreme of the Watchers, tasked with overseeing humanity's evolutionary tendency. Her mission was clear: observe, but never interfere. Unbeknownst to her, however, she was tested to ascertain her qualification status in carrying out this mission -- a test she failed. For in the line of her duty, an incident turned "accidentally" deadly. And Zoey made a fateful choice -- breaking protocol to save the life of an innocent, would-have-been-dead child. What she believed was an act of compassion was deemed a insubordination by the Watchers, a grave "sin" that disqualified her from her primary mission. As punishment, she was relegated to the ranks of the Preventors, a penitent role reserved for operatives who failed the Watchers' stringent tests. Now, Zoey has one chance at redemption: save the lives of 1,000 individuals targeted for sudden, inexplicable death across the globe -- all within 24 hours! Success will restore her honor and her place among the elite. Failure means an eternity as a Preventor, a shadow of her former self, forever haunted by the lives she could not save. Armed with extraordinary powers but racing against an impossible clock, Zoey must confront not only external forces but also the weight of her singular decision to save that child's life. Will she rise to the challenge, or will the burden of 1,000 lives prove too much, even for a superhuman?

Targeted by superpowered terrorists, an actress is protected by the government's strongest guardian--the same woman who broke her heart two years ago. ☆ Elsie Bates won't deny that she's made a few enemies during her fifteen-year acting career, but she never thought her actions would warrant her death at the hands of meta-human terrorists. As if that wasn't bad enough, her federally appointed bodyguard is the famous Camilla Wyatt, the most powerful guardian in the country and Elsie's sworn enemy. Because behind Camilla's sunny personality is a cold and heartless young woman, and no one but Elsie knows the truth. At least, that's what Elsie initially thinks. As it happens, being forced into a protective lockdown with someone can change perspectives, and Elsie slowly uncovers the secret behind Camilla's complicated character. In turn, Camilla begins to realize that maybe "trust issues" shouldn't be in her superpower repertoire, and self-preservation doesn't necessarily require self-isolation. But as the women grow closer, so do the forces that attempt to split them apart. And when the worlds of superpowered militaries, propaganda movies, and hidden conspiracies begin to collide, Elsie and Camilla must rely on each other to survive. ☆ INCLUDES: ✓ Militarized superheroes ✓ LGBTQ+ romance ✓ Diverse characters ✓ Subtle sociopolitical commentary ✓ "Science" FEATURED: ★ 2023 Amby Awards Top Pick (Sci-Fi) ★ @lgbtq Pride Awards 2023 Category Winner (Sci-Fi) ★ @FreeTheLGBT Pride Awards - Third Place ★ @TripleACommunity Aro Ace Awards - Shortlist ★ @superhero, @FreeTheLGBT, @WattpadUrbanFantasy, @StoriesUndiscovered Mature rating is for violence, grotesque descriptions, and swearing. "They took my sister. Now I'm taking her back." Seventeen years ago, humans started developing supernatural abilities. Comic books came true as the first person flew, created fire, mind-read. The world entered a new age where people who could do special things were revered and admired. That all changed when one man lost control of his power and unleashed a huge explosion in a crowded shopping centre, killing over a thousand others. A series of fights involving superhumans broke out, resulting in the destruction of multiple cities and hundreds upon hundreds of further lives lost. The government began hunting down those extraordinary people with the assistance of a specialised unit: trained in recognising different abilities. Suddenly powers became something scary, uncontrollable and dangerous, that nobody wanted to own up to having. Seventeen years after the Explosion, Amelie Rose Carmichael is the daughter of the man who is in charge of hunting down and imprisoning these people. She enjoys a comfortable life, protected from any threats against her. But when Amelie develops an ability without warning, she must try to keep it hidden from her family, her friends, and above all her father. Can she keep a secret? Will she use her powers to help the rebel organisation that has approached her? And what secrets are the people around her hiding? 85 parts Complete Mature

Young colonist Kayla Barnes needs to become a super soldier if she is going to save her home. She would rather die than fail. The Helvetic League's rule over Earth's thirty-seven colonies is failing. Desperate to hold onto power, its corrupt leaders send notorious terrorist Allana Rayker to the new world of Caldera, where she uncovers a horrifying weapon, as old as civilization itself. After her father is killed in front of her, Kayla is rescued by a mysterious commando named Urtiga. She offers Kayla the chance to one day join Valkyrie; a secret force of enhanced female super soldiers that protect humanity from the abandoned war machines of an extinct alien race. But until she is old enough, Kayla must attend a top girl's school and earn her place in the elite training. She finds herself studying alongside some of the galaxies' wealthiest aristocrats, like the beautiful and talented heiress Rose Djallen, who believe that colonists like Kayla should be subjugated by the 'superior' Helvetic culture. To become Valkyrie, they both face a gut-wrenching selection course that forces most recruits to quit. As Kayla struggles to keep going, she finds that to succeed she will need not only courage, and humility, but also friendships so strong, she and her fellow warriors would die for each other as they prepare to face the most terrifying enemy imaginable. *Illustration & Cover Design by Joshua Griffin
