The Great Northern War, which took place from 1700 to 1721, was a significant event in European history. It involved a coalition led by Russia, Denmark-Norway, and Saxony-Poland-Lithuania, aiming to reduce the influence of the Swedish Empire. The coalition fought against Sweden, led by Charles XII.

Sweden initially had some successes in the war, but the turning point came at the Battle of Poltava in 1709, where they were defeated by Russia. This defeat led to Charles XII's exile and allowed the coalition to gain the upper hand, resulting in territorial concessions and the end of Sweden's dominance in the Baltic region. The war marked Russia's rise to power and the beginning of Sweden's Age of Liberty.
