In the absence of darkness, mankind was able to build civilization and spread throughout Remnant. In the discovery of Dust, humanity was able to harnessed it's power and utilized it to defend themselves in the terror of the dark force. While also possessing Aura, a form of energy that bestows the user of extraordinary abilities known as Semblances.
In the current day, most people live within the four Kingdoms - Vale, Mistral, Atlas and Vacuo. Through a combination of Human tenacity and the use of natural barriers, these settlements managed to survive and are regarded as "safe havens" and "beacons of hope" for humanity.
Huntsman academies are established to train warriors to combat Grimm using combinations of powerful weapons and unique abilities to eradicate the Grimm menace. Auras and Semblances are the pillars of Huntsmen and Huntresses alike to combat the Grimm terror.
However there are of a few that doesn't need such fancy things to get the job done. . .

Remnant is a land full of legends and stories. Some are more popularly known such The Story of the Seasons and the legend of the Silver-Warriors. However, there is one legend that has been long forgotten and buried deep in Remnant's history. This is the legend of The Grimm Hunter, a creature of terrible power that was believed to have terrorized Humanity before the four Kingdoms were established and shortly after Humanity discovered Dust. It's been depicted to be an amalgamation of different Grimm with the ability to absorb the life-force of any creature with a soul. Not only did doing so regenerate any dealt wounds, but also allowed it to convert it into dark and destructive energy. Even though The Grimm Hunter was a creature of darkness itself, it also slaughtered Grimm with the same level of ferocity it showed Humanity. However, just as it seemed The Grimm Hunter would eradicate all of Humanity, it vanished without a trace. Not many know what happened to it but the legend speculates that a squadron of Silver-Eyed Warriors defeated it. But, that's not the truth, now is it?
