"You know I used to dream about them coming back? I used to imagine what it would be like if they came and picked me up and we would be happy. When I realised that my dream would never come true I moved on to another fantasy. I'd have foster parents, real good ones. Who loved me and treated me like their own daughter. We'd live in this beautiful house, with a white picket fence and we'd have a dog. We'd be a proper family. They would eventually adopt me and I'd be theirs and they be mine. That dream never worked out either." My voice is soft, my mind in the past.

"What happened after that?" He asks,
His voice equally soft.

"I just stopped dreaming. I guess I realised that life isn't fair. One person can sail through life, happy, at least most of the time. And another can hit rock bottom and never be able to pull themselves back up. I realised that this isn't a fairytale, this is life. And life doesn't have happy endings."
