The Ancient Greeks always had it right: the sea cannot be restrained. It is ancient, and harbours things and mysteries no mortal will ever be able to understand. But Percy Jackson is no mere mortal. Like his father, he is the sea itself.

When Percy finds himself alone in Tartarus, all the odds stacked against him, he expects to die. Poseidon's grief destroys entire countries, but when the god comes to retrieve his son's body, he finds Percy somewhere between life and death. His very soul has been so altered, Apollo must be called in and Poseidon is forced to bring back his oldest, and most dangerous, self.

Percy, meanwhile, must make a decision that will alter not just the world, but the fabric of reality of itself. And to do so, he must face a series of trials.
