On a lovely June afternoon, as the oh-so-chic members of the Gilded Grove Ladies' Book Club gather for their scheduled luncheon, they are shocked to receive the news that their vice president, Camilla Otis, is unable to attend. Gossip ensues. What catastrophe could possibly have befallen her to warrant a last minute cancellation?

The answer comes by way of two clever, dashing police officers. It seems Camilla Otis has had quite a busy morning, and that the truth behind her absence is far more scandalous than the Book Club ladies could ever have imagined.

As the police dig deeper into the events surrounding Mrs. Otis' shocking crime, buried secrets about the other Book Club members begin to surface. None of the women in question are the fine, upstanding ladies of society that the public believes them to be. Each has tarnish on her so-called "sterling reputation." And no one has more to hide than club president Marcella Montgomery.

Written for ONC 2024, this is a tongue-in-cheek "whodunit" (in reverse) that will leave you wondering just what a scorned woman *wouldn't* do for sweet, sweet revenge.

"Guys, I got another note," I say as I sit down at lunch. Vanessa and Xander were here but Hazel was missing. "Where's Hazel?" I question, eyeing her empty seat. "Out with Adam today, it's Friday," Xander says whilst I munch on my sandwich. "Did you say you got another note?" He asks and I hold my finger up and try to swallow my food as quickly I can so I can speak again. "Yeah, this one says, 'You look so beautiful in blue, I wish I could say this in person,' I really want to know who's playing this prank," I say and my eyes fall to the only prankster in Waterstone Academy, Sebastein. "I don't think it is Sebastien, he loves attention and this doesn't scream attention," Vanessa says as my eyes land on him. But my eyes move from Sebastien quickly to the hottest man in Waterstone, Vincent. He has been bugging me for a week, trying to talk to me and he even asked me to come to Logan's party on the weekend. My eyes must have been drilling holes into his face because he turns in my directions. I quickly turn back to Xander and Vanessa who were talking about their Art projects. "Okay, so if not Sebastien then who?" I voice my thoughts out loud. "Maybe you have a secret admirer," Xander says in all seriousness and I burst out laughing. My laugh attracts some attention because 1) it was loud, 2) I snorted. "Yeah right," I say once I sober up. *** A secret admirer. Everyone wishes they had one but not Amara. Her secret admirer has been torturing her ex-bullies and even though that's what she wanted before, now all she wants is for it to stop. She doesn't want anyone getting hurt because of her, she knows how that feels and she doesn't wish that on anyone. A hot boy and a secret admirer, Amara needs to figure out who her secret admirer before someone gets seriously hurt or even worse, killed.

Clues from the Ebony Gardens murder point to the same gang, but the gangsters can smell Drew coming, and bullets are cheap. By the time Drew enters the seductive orbit of a mink-eyed vixen addicted to risk, he's in over his head. If he isn't shot full of daylight by gangster tommy guns, he'll drown in Bianca's perfumed embrace. It's enough to make a gumshoe readjust his fedora. ----- This noir flavored detective yarn is set 100 years back in time. It's a bit grittier than my usual breezy output. This story is basically clean and I did not flag it as mature. However, darker human failings (alcohol use, sexual desire, and violence) drive the plot. I don't dwell on those aspects, but it's definitely a story for grownups. The intended audience is new adult or adult. Winner! 2022 Amby Awards, Mystery and Thriller category. Winner! 3rd place in the Ballsy Tea Awards 2022, Action and Adventure category.

And wrapped into its hanger is a beautiful, fresh rose, with a piece of paper taped to the top of the prickly stem. Confused, I take the rose from the hanger and pull the note close to my eyes. It's in the same scribbled handwriting like the one I found in her locker. I read it, look at the rose, then read it again and again and again: You two were so close. What happened? All because she killed a man? And to think... It could've been you. Ryan Steel should have a good life. He has a good family, a beautiful girlfriend, great friends, and popularity.
