If you still refuse , you will die at the stroke of midnight the next day. If you were unable to go through with it, you survive. If you were to make a promise about something in the past and it's not true, you die the moment you finish the sentence. For example, if you were to promise your spouse that you never cheated on them, and you did, you would die. This supernatural aspect was known to everyone in this world.
