Four moons have passed since Weatherfall left Snowclan for Waterclan. He finally feels at home in his new Clan, where none of his Clanmates compare him to his sister, Rockflight. However, Weatherfall starts seeing her ghost wherever he goes, haunted by his guilt. But that's not the only ghost he sees... Cloudyfang, a mysterious cat, visits Weatherfall with whispers of a great darkness coming, and instructions on how to save all the Clans...
Briarclaw, now the only medicine cat in Snowclan, was also warned of the darkness. He has no idea what to do and feels lost managing his clan alone. After a new murderous Clan arrive at their borders, and tensions rise between Snowclan and Airclan, Briarclaw learns more about his family than he ever bargained for, and realizes that he might be connected to the prophecy after all...

While the deputy, Owlstripe, vouches for him because he saved her kits, Froststar isn't so sure. Weatherfall must prove himself if he's going to be accepted into a new Clan, but he must also dig deep inside himself and reflect on the choices that led him to Waterclan in the first place. Meanwhile, back in Snowclan, both Stormsplash and Briarpaw are grieving after losing their respective sisters. Stormsplash searches for answers to Rockflight's death, knowing that something's not adding up. When Briarpaw finds out that Weatherfall might still be alive, he'll stop at nothing to find him, hoping to spare even more heartbreak.
