Charlotte "Charlie" Parker is just a high school girl looking for an escape. Her only way out of the dead town where she lives is her writing. She wants to be an author, and that dream is the force propelling her forward.

When she meets Tristan Andrews, the handsome new kid, she decides that his arrogant ways and off-the-wall remarks aren't worth her time. To her, Tristan is a just a spoiled, self-entitled jock who doesn't care about anyone but himself.

But, at a party, when a controlling ex-boyfriend seeks revenge on Charlie for breaking his heart, Tristan heroically steps in and saves her. Charlie suddenly feels indebted to him -- like she owes him something. But when she tries to find a way to repay him, he won't hear it.

Charlie starts to wonder if she was wrong about Tristan. And when the duo is partnered for an English project, they're thrown into each other's paths constantly. There is NO WAY Charlie is going to risk failing this assignment -- if her English grade goes down, so do her chances of getting a scholarship to college. Tristan, on the other hand, couldn't care less about the project (or so it seems).
