The story follows the war between the Empire of Lassania and the Dalvani Magocracy. The empire is governed by a matriarchal royal family of dragonmaidens, the Vashtal, that uses its taming of dread unwinged dragons to expand westwards over the Verdant Greens and Everguardian Mountains and meet with the desperate defenses of the Dalvani, a chaste-based mage society that presents an enormous resilience in being conquered. Two threads are followed in this war: General Vaila Vashtal and her dragon Melthrax advancing with their Legions, facing trials of battle and the dangers of dragon Taming, against the mage Alduin, a young and afraid mage who is taken to the warfront because of his predilections for a specific capacity in magicking. To the east, in the capital city of the Lassania Empire, Valsrest, an orphan by the name Scrappy discovers more about her ancestrality while becoming a capable thief. She will cross paths with the slave Ominira Odwá, an Indwomani from conquered lands who is unsure about his fate and purpose under the hands of the Empire, seeking his freedom and revenge.

Year 403

Corrin and Sachse are best friends, but they're not supposed to be. Meanwhile, Ostara lives over the border and pushes through her daily life with a mask permanently etched on her face, hiding her insecurities. When she accidentally ends up on the wrong side while gathering plants, Corrin pulls her into his friend's alley to hide, but only hours later, the Wizards have launched a war against the Witches for foul play, and all men in their twenties to sixties must be conscripted to war. Ostara, sick of dealing with the pressures that come with being a woman, makes an impossible choice and changes her fate. As the war begins, Planet, Sol, and Moon find a new residence and caretaker for the years ahead, and they study the languages and customs of society, not knowing what could lie in store for them all. As Skylar narrates this tale, you'll read plots of forbidden friendship and love, struggles with identity, and gruesome battles.
