Claude Von Riegan was the only person in the world who seemed to lack a soulmate. He should have gotten his marking on his sixteenth birthday but it never appeared. Now at the age of seventeen while away from Garreg Mach on an assignment with the Knights His arm begins to burn and itch and when he pulls up his sleeve a soulmate marking has appeared. A doe framed in unopened desert roses. The marking will change itself when he meets his other half. During this excursion they are ambushed by bandits and subsequently saved by a young man named Byleth and his father Jeralt.

When they return to the monastery they find a girl in strange clothes with Arch Bishop Rhea eagerly asking all sorts of questions. She eerily looks almost exactly like a female version of Byleth. This young woman is the lost daughter of Jeralt. Kidnapped as an infant and taken through an outrealm gate to another world, she returned looking for her father after the witch's demise and reading her journal. She is the one who has the other half of Claude's marking. A stag with the same desert rose border.
