He survived only because he got lucky, he knew that. His life should have ended when those things raided his village, he should have shared the fate of his friends and family, but somehow he was still here. And still running. Hoping that he wouldn't encounter any of these creatures in the forest.
Cold, unforgiving forest, that stretched for hundreds of miles, without any other humans settlement he knew of.
