Introduction: These will serve as snippets of what I hope to become a full blown novel at some point in my life. Our genre of choice here will be science fiction. Our setting is within the Milky Way galaxy set about 7 thousand years into our future. Humankind has spread out from the cradle of earth and established new homes on countless worlds over the millennia. Earth itself is more myth to the people in our story, they live far removed from the home world of their race, clear across the galaxy nearly 70,000 light years away. FTL (Faster than light) travel is a necessity, and there are two main means.
The first method is warp travel. Warp drive bends space and time around the ship allowing it to move. A ship can stay in warp only for a limited amount of time since it draws so much power. The larger the ship, the more powerful warp shell can be generated and the longer the ship can stay in warp.
The second method of travel is a hyper jump. A hyper jump is when a ship uses either a natural or artificial gravity well to create an artificial wormhole to a gravity well in another part of the galaxy. With the exception of super massive ships, jumps are limited to fixed points in space where either a gate has been constructed or there is a strong enough gravity source (An example being a black hole, neutron star, or pulsar like star).
