The world was at peace, all benders harmonising, until Firelord Sozin attacked. Avatar Roku did all he could but he failed. Avatar Aang was then born to the air nomads, only to be slain at the age of 12 by Sozin's forces. A new avatar was born to the Northern water tribe, he is the last chance against the forces of the Firelord.
