Others call me blessed, but I know I'm cursed. The day I got my powers was the day I realised all magic comes with a cost. Nature loves its balance. I never asked for this, but this is the burden I now have to carry. I was use to the solitude of travelling alone, just my animal companion by my side for these past few years. But then I met them; this ragtag group of individuals in need of a Druid to complete a job. And they came with Boro. An egotistical, over dramatic Elven bard that taught me I might actually have something worth living for. That is if we survive this next job. *** ONC24 entry Prompt 48: 'The curse of magic is that for every reward, there is a great loss. For every spell that goes right, there is something else- in the real, natural world- that goes terribly wrong. Nature loves its balance.' ***

First off, this story was not written by me. I am posting it for a friend of mine, with permission of course. This took place in a Dungeons & Dragons game over 30 years ago. It is a about how one of the player characters got his start; Crentar Bronn. He is a human ranger of 1st level in this story. This is important to note, because it'll bring more perspective as you read the story. I was the DM (Dungeon Master) for this game. At the time, we were still in high school, which of course, gives away our age. lol I decided to have each character do it solo before they actually met up with each other. A teaser so-to-speak. Eventually, there was five player characters in the game. My friend who ran Crentar Bronn remembers this whole solo adventure to this very day in great detail. A few years after the game is when he wrote this story. We were recently reminiscing about 'old times' and he told me that he actually wrote it out as a story. He was then able to find it on an old hard drive & then sent it to me. I was very surprised at how good this is & how great his memory was from that adventure. I'm flattered that he was so inspired by it, that he turned it into a story! I hope you enjoy this early adventure of Crentar Bronn as much as we did. Perhaps, with enough comments & likes, he'll be inspired to write more chapters. THX
