Life in London in 1865 is often seen as formal and posh for the upper-class, but what the married people didn't know, couldn't hurt them. After dark is when wild parties and dances are held for the young people, where no rules apply. Enjoying life to the fullest, Alice Harland loves London with a passion and couldn't care less about looking for a husband, but when her two brothers come to make her and her sister Georgiana Ladies fit for marriage, she realises that time is running out. Reluctantly she agrees to return home with them, knowing that she would never find an appropriate husband in London and not wanting to disappoint her family, but on her final night of freedom, she manages to find herself falling in love with a dark stranger at a masquerade ball. Forcing herself to put the man behind her, she tries to make herself like the man chosen by her family just as much. Just as she thinks she has gotten over him, the man renters her life in the most unexpected and inappropriate circumstances. Facing the decision between disappointing her family to be the one she loves or living a life of only half-happiness, she is forced to grow up sooner than she would ever have liked.
