The 20s are back and the Prohibition is in full effect. Only this time the only spirits that are being outlawed isn't alcohol - it's powerful potions, endangered magical creatures and living souls being confined into bottles.

These illicit spirits are coveted by criminal organizations that want to take over the underworld. One dangerous concoction could decimate an entire city to oblivion. Some of these spirits can be used to power engines, regenerate the tissue of a cadaver or make someone glow like a firefly, but the most dangerous of them all is to use the vessel of an imprisoned spirit to use mind control.

Aster Rhodes was just a homeless lad who travelled across the states playing an old violin in the park when he got discovered by Daisy Ray. The young violinist has a penchant for bad poetry and soliloquys though it didn't deter the widow from introducing Aster to the frontman of the once-nomadic band called the Daisy Dukes - Darrell "Zib" Zibulon aka the Dandy Lion.

After passing the rehearsal, the real head honcho of the speakeasy, Blaise Ray shows Aster the ropes of the business operates, though he didn't know the real extent of what his job would entail after the owner of the Dandelion speakeasy gets murdered one night.

The business starts to sink and the only way to keep it afloat is to procure the illicits spirits, no one else is willing to take the risk to go bootlegging except for Aster, and Blaise's goddaughter - Ivy Taylor.

Ghost aren't real. And chics this cute don't tell you they are. It's the reassurance I told myself, which mostly didn't work cause it was a straight up lie. This book doesn't have effervescent, long haired fairy's or stoic vampires that smolder and fight. More like a judgmental grumpy teen weed dealer named Zach, who shamefully talks about himself in third person like this. And you won't find some grand quest up a mountain or into an unknown land rich with magic because I have asthma and no time for that shit. And lastly, there will be absolutely no hideous romance where instantly the girl of my dreams sweeps me off my feet. I get on her nerves far to much for that. Finding out I'm part of ancient group of mediums tasked with cataloging, fighting and cleansing ghost you would think has some upsides. But so far all that comes with it is cold chilled air that gives me the sniffles when they're around. I'd like to say by the end of this book I'll have conquered the monster and won over the girl, but as you read you'll learn that's far to much faith in a screwup like me. This book won't be for everyone, hell people die in it. But the good news is that if I die at least I'll be around, floating off of the pages to haunt you in your home. Actually that sounds like bad news so perhaps try and finish so you know if you have a ghost . *This story contains themes of suicide, sexual content, drug use and mature language. 🎶Look up the Bury A Friend playlist on spotify to play the songs at every number.🎶

But the night of the massacre changes it all. She thought she died, but she didn't. She just slept for two centuries. Two-hundred years later, she wakes up in Genesis City, one of dozens under the Saint Society. She's told that while she slept, witches had survived the huntings and won the war against the vampires. Ever since, the society had thrived, creating borders to keep them safe from the ferals who survived the war. Now that she's awake, she's no longer just the powerful witch who can navigate dreams and nightmares. She's now the possible answer to immortality. And from the moment she wakes up, Aster gets the royal treatment only given to Astrals. That is until she discovers something that will turn her from worshiped to hunted. Something is wrong with her. And something is definitely awry in this new world. As Aster tries to figure out what really happened to her two-hundred years ago, she comes face to face with Harald Evensen, a cold, immortal piece of vampire she hated then and forever. He betrayed his coven to be part of the Saint Society for a very good reason. And part of that reason is her. As much as she wants to have nothing to do with him, she needs him. Being the only one who had lived for the two centuries she was asleep, he has answers to her past. And he has blood to offer. Whether Aster likes it or not, her life depends on both.

It contains romance storylines but there are a lot of other kinds of relationships represented. Most of the characters in the series are queer, including the main character who is ace. The worldbuilding includes vampires, immortals, and magic, with my personal twist on the lore. There is definitely drama in the story but also a lot of fluff. *** TW : violence, grief, addiction.
