Sometimes, coercion is not so obvious. Sometimes, it's not so easy to ignore the signs. Sometimes, the manipulation is so sneaky that you think it was your fault all along. Sometimes, it is your own demons that cause tragedy. Sometimes, it can be your fault.
Follow along with this poetic short story about persuasion and coercion. Not only is it possible for others to manipulate you to do something, but it's also possible for you to be the bad guy in your own story. It's possible to persuade and manipulate yourself because of how much hate you have toward yourself. What are you supposed to do when you are the one who allowed someone to walk all over you? When you are the one who invited it, who initiated it? What happens when tragedy strikes, but you can't blame the other person because it was all your doing?
Follow this sad exploration of self-hatred as our protagonist journeys through a life-changing incident that leaves her questioning her own very being.

"WHY CAN'T YOU GET IT INSIDE YOUR HEAD?" He trapped my trembling body between his arms and slammed his fist into the wall. I flinch at the sound as I feel tears forming in my eyes. "I'M SICK AND TIRED OF YOUR CRYING. JUST ACCEPT THE FACT THAT YOU'RE NEVER LEAVING. THIS IS YOUR LIFE NOW, WITH ME" He spits, anger consuming his voice as I push myself further against the wall. Shutting my eyes closed and turning my face to the side as I do. Moments later, I feel his rough hand on my waist and his finger grazing my cheek. "Look at me, love." His hand grips onto my jaw, his thumb playing across my lower lip. He turns my face to meet his as I lower my gaze to the floor. He lowers himself to my level and I feel his breath fanning my cheek causing my breathing to become unsteady. "I love you so much, darling. But you need to learn. Evolution
There are a lot of things you don't really think about until they happen to you. Take rape, for instance. I always thought, "That won't happen to me. I have a boyfriend. I trust him. He would never take advantage of me like that..." I couldn't have been more wrong. Love in this day and age is often confused for manipulation and abuse. The warning signs are here. The things we say will tell us everything that is wrong. You are worth more than what you think you are. It's not your fault. If they tell you otherwise, get out. Burn the bridge. Always remember someone is waiting for you to walk into their life. Someone needs you. Someone loves you. Getting away from all of the wrong people and finding the right ones could save you. I can promise you right now that it saved me. These are the journal entries and selected poems from my first experience of love that left a unpleasant taste in my mouth- quite literally.
