Hayley Sully is trained as an underwater warrior. She is tasked to lure men to their watery deaths so she can capture their souls with a kiss. The souls from mankind will maintain her power to hide her watery kingdom, which is not an easy task.
Tradition is that the Sirens are to keep their virtue, and love is never permitted. love is seen as a distraction to the important task of keeping the merpeople hidden. Love for Sirens is seen as a dishonour, and the sentence for not keeping your virtues is death.
Only the Sirens are permitted to go to the surface, as Human Soul hunters. They have this honour, and it comes with many sacrifices.
