If youre have trouble, to distinguish between dream and reality and fight against creatures, who have abilitys, that aren't even possibel, then it gets more twisted than bevor and harder to tell, what dreams and whats reality. Therefor comes that youre brain is always in a stage of protection and fighting and it could not tell anymore, whats there and whats just halluzinated. It imagine, that there is something or youre just dreaming amd this is all a nightmare. If you fight Demons, with such a twisted view, it is just logical, that the symptoms gets even worse and it comes pretty close to think, if it is schizophrenia, since the brain sees things and hear voices, that aren't there and in the same time, it thinks it's trapped in a nightmare. It definitely was a mistake to train Enmu and let him fight against creatures such as Demons, but who could have know it, that is situation can get any worse? He was just a little bit of a dreamer, they thought but oh boy, were there wrong.
It's hard to accept the reality, if you don't know, what real is and what not. It's hard to fit in, if youre way of thinking is twisted, to the point youre crave for suffering, just to enjoy it or feel youre own body, cause the view of the world is so twisted, that youre cannot tell, if it is you or even youre body. It's hard to take propper care of themself if nothing make sense and it's hard to live a lufe like everyone if youre brain imagine things or hear the Demons, when they aren't there.
So everbody agrees, that they all make a mistake with Enmu by letting him fight but he has no were to go and is desperate and stubborn. But as they realized it, it was already to late to stop it, so they painfully watch, how he try's to manage everthink and collapse under the pain and pressure over and over.

Rengoku has a past that you are fairly aware of since you grew up together. Kinda. After you both began to grow to try and achieve a future desired. You unfortunately faced the worst event in your lifetime. Rengoku had already moved elsewhere and during the couple days he's not been in the neighborhood anymore. The worst had happened.
Striving to become a demon slayer, you became the enemy without choice. Miserably living your couple of days as a demon. It wasn't until a Hashira found you eventually. When brought to fight a foe that you were under prepared for, you find a familiar face in them. Stuck between wanting to die without another word or saying something. You let it all out regardless if your superior limited your every move. Now what would an old friend do in such a situation now that you guys are way off from a chance of redeeming any bond?
The wheel of fate tries to find balance in between a on-going war. A demon with a demon slayer, nonetheless a Hashira at that; this violates code on both sides that were either written or just common sense. When attempting to work it out, you find each other to have a hard time even making it possible. Making the situation worse the longer you bond after lost time. Will your interactions contribute to Rengoku's life greatly and will be so that in your case?
Cudos to: Koyoharu Gotouge and Art that I've found on Google for the chapters.
