He doesn't have a name. Well at least not anymore. His parents probably called him something but he blocks those memories out. A mutated shouldn't have feelings after all. Though he thinks he cares about his son, small little thing, only a year old, he doesn't know for sure.
Welcome to his word. A land where the sun burns flesh at its lowest temperature, rain is acidic and some humans changed to become the mutated. The mutated are not that different from humans; they simplify have extra features and enhanced or reduced abilities.
Oh and they pick up a beast along the way because why not?

My Name is Danny Brinead. The year is 2034 and thanks to the Bermudians the world now has to deal with people like me. People who reacted to the gas that flooded all of our streets in order to change us, for better or worse? No one knows. The government thinks they do though, they think that we're all menaced to society and that we need to be found, captured, and controlled. They even went as far as forming the Justification to replace our current government. They basically did everything in their power to catch us. Although it didn't work very well. There are still thousands of us out there hiding in plain site. So that's how our country decided to turn against its own, the Variables. That's what they call us. "It's human nature. It's instinct to survive, no matter the cost." The world has fallen into desolation. The apocalypse has already started and finished, leaving some of the surviving ones with strange powers and mysterious scars. The world has ended, according to some, and is now in a state of rebirth. Others say it hasn't ended yet and that it's only going to get worse. The remaining people have grouped together in packs and gangs, raiding the desolate cities and avoiding the ones called the Destroyers, who capture and torture the remaining survivors. No one is safe. One fifteen year old boy knows this better than anyone. He and his older sister lived together, sticking to the dark alleys of their abandoned city, and survived for years after the apocalypse, until the Destroyers came and took her away, reigning terror on the few who remained in the city. The boy, desperate to find someone to help him save his sister, leaves the city and finds one of the youngest cooperative packs in North America, called the Raiders, comprised of unwanted individuals with the strange powers left from the destruction of years past. Their leader, a destructive insomniac, promises to help him in return for the skills and usefulness this young boy seems to possess, but something disrupting sends waves of unease through the Raiders, something about a forgotten past and talk of a mutiny. "Maybe there's more to life than just surviving." ... Rated C for Caution. Though it's rated mature, there is no bad language or vivid descriptions of sexual contact. It does have very strong themes. Warning: This book contains mental issues such as depression, schizophrenia, and others. If you're sensitive to that kind of thing, then you should probably think twice before reading this. Of course, if you want to read it and you're sensitive, I'm not stopping you. This book only touches upon the subjects; It doesn't go deep into suicide attempts and voices. Remember despite the hate these mental illnesses receive, I believe you. Mental illnesses are no joke, they're not something I try to use for views. I am not hating on the illnesses. I know it's hard, but they are relevant to the book so I had to include them. If you're feeling depressed, please talk to a counsellor. 100 years ago, amidst WW3's nuclear bombing, a deadly virus was released in the atmosphere and nearly wiping out the humanity. It lives inside the human brain thriving on the empathy receptors, leading to irrational behaviour and ultimately brain death. To slow the damage, scientists created L.O.V.E, short for Living Off Vital Emotions, a nanovaccine that numbs the virus and switches off all strong emotions. As a last resort and with a dying planet, the Supreme Government created the City, a place to contain the infected survivors suitable for the experiment. Those in the first stages of illness became ideal candidates to receive the neuroinhibitor. Having their feelings restrained and their memory altered, those who come of age are designated a life partner through a Selection process, thus preserving the humankind. A few decades after the trial had started, scientists had a major breakthrough. The nanites, which are highly chemically reactive organisms, are changing their bio-engineered purpose when dopamine levels are high. With a new generation of nanoids, stronger and smarter to fight the battle, the virus doesn't have a chance. Many attempts were made to create a man-made version of synthetic dopamine and each time the outcome was a disaster. Their goal is to create new generations, immune to the virus. These are called Purebloods, the offsprings of those who find pure love, the only cure to save them from a violent death. Running out of time, the Experiment entered in its final stages. To minimize the threats, the Colonies have sent their best soldiers to oversee the trial and protect its key subjects. If only things were going according to plan, or better...stay hidden.
