Germany. A central European nation that is known for pretzels, beer and the chant "Ich bin ein Berliner" that echoes through the streets of the capital and through TikTok is also heard in the rest of the economic powerhouse of the EU. For a matter of fact, when its about Germany, many things come to mind, but certainly not overseas territory. Exept for maybe the small island of Sylt or the infamous Helgoland there really is not much to cover here. Well, 140 years ago that was about the same. But then came the Berlin conference on Africa, and things changed, as the new and rising german state now had the legal consent from London, Paris, Rome, Vienna, Istanbul and St. Petersburg to claim lands 5 times the size of the homeland. How the german colonies came to be, how life was there and how they met their end I will explain here.
