No matter how desperately I gasped, it felt as though my lungs refused to cooperate.

My chest tightened until it burned.

My vision blurred.

My hands trembled uncontrollably.

A panic attack.

And this time...

I wasn't calm enough to stop it.

BANG!

The door exploded off its hinges.

Wood splintered across the room.

The stranger stepped inside.

Without a word, they wrapped the enormous chain around one arm, shortening it with impossible ease.

It shouldn't have been possible.

The chain was nearly three times their size.

Yet they wielded it as though it weighed nothing.

Then they laughed.

The sound...

It wasn't human.

It was distorted.

Wrong.

The kind of laugh that made every instinct inside me scream to run.

One strike from that chain...

I'd be dead.

The stranger swung it.

The chain sliced through the air with terrifying speed.

I couldn't move.

Darkness slowly swallowed my vision.

So... this is how I die?

Alone.

Unmarried.

Great.

Mom and Dad are going to be devastated.

Just before darkness claimed me completely...

The stranger shrieked.

A blood curdling scream tore through the apartment.

The chain froze inches away from me.

The masked figure stood perfectly still, as though something invisible had seized them.

They looked...

Terrified.

In pain.

Then it happened.

Without warning, flames erupted from inside their body.

Not around them.

Inside them.

Fire burst through their skin as they convulsed in agony.

Within seconds...

Their entire body crumbled into glowing ashes that scattered across the floor.

"Wha..."

The word never left my lips.

The darkness finally consumed me.

And I fell into a deep, dreamless slumber...
