It might be surprising, but this story isn't about the animals. Emanuel was... different. Every night he would get teleported into insane dreams where fictional characters lived in a normal society out of their daily adventures. He even stated to question if it was a dream...

There are some minor typos in it. It's not as bad as 1991 but try to ignore them and just enjoy the story.
