Katerina spend her whole childhood in the red room, training to be a black widow assassin. When Natasha tries to find Yelena, she comes across Katerina, who too is mind controlled.
Once Natasha breaks the mind control of Katerina, Yelena and the other widows, Natasha brings both Katerina and Yelena back to the Avengers compound to join the Avengers.
Kat seems to be settling in well with her new teammates, apart from one, James 'Bucky' Barnes, who always ignores her and has a cold attitude towards Kat. That's until they have their first mission together and everything starts to unravel between them.

They agree but don't trust her. They save Bucky and see who he was and who she was. They then ask them to join the Avengers. Bucky declines the offer, wanting to live a normal life, but Elizabeth doesn't know if she should join her her brother, fighting evil with her unnatural powers, or stay with Bucky, living a sort of normal life. Who will she choose? She loves them both and doesn't want to leave them. She can't decide, but with this Civil War, she won't have to.
