Ellie Blando was shocked as the ball slammed into her cheek with force. The ringing in her ears confirmed the impact, followed by a burning sensation on her skin. Her eyes widened as the pain slowly registered. 

Today was supposed to be her first day at the new school, and she had rehearsed all morning how to make a good first impression. Now, it was all ruined. Amidst the laughter echoing in the classroom, Ellie's gaze landed on Jeremy Diaz, a tall, dark-haired boy with tousled hair and grey eyes-the culprit of her misfortune.

Jeremy walked towards her, looking apologetic, but Ellie's embarrassment hardened into dislike. She cursed him silently under her breath.
