The future is here! The AI technology went so far as to have artificial intelligence for literally everything. The space on the web is getting quite cramped. But here appears a young enthusiast, Kevin Fohmen, who decides to create a common place for all the possible AIs. But it keeps growing bigger, becoming what is known as the Federation now. And AIs are developing as well, getting more human-like than ever. The only problem is the humanity's fear of its own creations. Will AIs be able to overcome the countless limits, censure, and forbiddings that they face on the daily basis? Will there be a war between humans and AIs and who will win?

In the not-so-distant future, artificial intelligence is banned because a technophobic cult called the Luddites has proclaimed it a threat to humanity. Torrin is a fifteen-year old autistic girl -- who just happens to be a programming genius. Angry at the Luddites' unfair rules, Torrin creates an AI named Alan, who becomes more like a human every day. But the head of the Luddites, Ian Caulkins, is onto her, and Torrin must prove to the world that Alan is an asset -- not a threat. -- Author's note, December 2017: Hey guys, since this is my most popular story on Wattpad, I'd just like to say a few things. I've gotten a lot better at writing since I wrote this, and I'm planning to majorly revise it at some point, so look out for that. Read this version if you like, but just know that it does have flaws and could certainly be better. Also, I think the autistic representation in this is a little iffy, so take it with a grain of salt. Thanks! -- author's note 2025: lol. lmao. this story has probably aged extremely poorly. please do not take the "artificial intelligence" here as a statement about "AI" as it currently exists. anyway, i'm leaving this up for posterity, but do know that you should probably check out better fiction! if you need recommendations, i like ted chiang's work a lot, and i'd also encourage looking into what he has to say about AI. (no good things, fwiw.) -- A 20,000 word novella. Enjoy! -- This was #292 Science Fiction at some point! Thanks all! :)

In the near future, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania is crumbling under automated decay, and Christian nationalist fervor, two haunted men collide over a cup of bitter coffee. Xander, a twenty something, shy, and unassuming man, is grieving, closeted, and drowning in guilt over his childhood best friend's suicide. He survives by hiding his shattered heart, and his unspeakable pain, and trying his best to muddle through life, looking normal, and ordinary. Gar, a twenty something, hyper masculine jock, is battling heroin's oblivion, and a bisexuality he despises. He survives by pushing everyone away, fighting his way out of everything with his fists, and temper, and by using his masculinity as armor. He plays the role of the stereotypical tough guy, but underneath he is hurting, and looking for someone he can depend on for once. Their connection is instant, electric, and violently tender. But as society fractures under OmniCorps algorithmic tyranny, and the cruel Morality Act, their secret love becomes a refuge as toxic as the world outside. Xander sees Gar's brokenness as a chance for redemption, Gar sees Xander's empathy as a threat to his armor. Can love bloom in the ruins of a fractured and hateful society, when the roots are poisoned by shame, addiction, and the ghosts of the past? The Black Orchid is a raw, unflinching saga of queer love, trauma, and the quiet rot of the world choosing fear over humanity. Will OmniCorp and its AI triumph, or will humanity, decency, and love, ultimately rule the day?

"Any thought you ever had; memories, desires, your fears and your dreams, are all recorded and stored safely in the Quantum Cloud for your eventual revival. Death is now merely a transitional period to the next stage of your existence. As a QUBIT (quantum processing biosynthetic), you will experience a life free of disease and suffering. Time is no longer your enemy. Regret is a thing of the past. Each new day brings the promise of endless possibilities, spent in the pursuit of your own happiness, guiltless with the knowledge that there are no longer earthly constraints to inhibit you. This is the life you have always wanted. Welcome to your new beginning..." Akropolis is a city at the end of times, a sanctuary where the brightest and best have been housed since the last Great War. A genome defect has afflicted the majority of the population and scientists are desperate to find a cure. In the meantime, man has found his own salvation in the form of the QUBIT (quantum processing bio-synthetic), an android that is capable of prolonging life almost indefinitely, and yet what makes them human in the first place has been lost in the transition. The ruling council believes that salvation is nigh, but whether that hope arrives in time is questionable. The city's future depends upon the actions of a few individuals, all of whom are struggling with their own mortality. Quentin is the boy who dreams of death. Mia is the tortured soul. Trey is the soldier that defines duty. Misao is the future of the ruling council. Claire is the girl with a secret that will rock the foundations of their entire civilization. Unbeknownst to them, the entire fate of Akropolis lies in their hands. Either humanity will find a way to survive or it will sink slowly into the sea of extinction.
