This is a collection of short-stories and flash-fiction. Each narrative is complete and independent, and can be read in any order. Although varying in length, they are all relatively short, to present a quick and fun read, while you're on the go. Each one presents a view, theme, or idea to entertain as well as provoke your imagination and critical thinking. The characters are varied and as confused about the ever evolving modern world as the rest of us.

They include tales of cyborgs, alien worlds, alternate futures, supernatural transformations, and the spiritual crises and transitions new technologies will demand of our soul. The characters include space nomads, time-traveling detectives, artificial consciousness, and ordinary people grappling with rapid and uncontrollable change.

Hope you enjoy!

The Box Has Twelve Sides: Thirteen Curious Tales to Delight and Disturb de mkbagwell
16 Partes Concluida Contenido adulto
A homeless man discovers a mysterious box which transports him back to his childhood. On each side of the box, both inside and out, a new world reveals itself to him: He experiences another man's worst day of luck. An old, dying man befriends an alien creature and shares an inexplicable bond. A unique blanket helps a young woman in a time of crisis. Another man's grief of losing his dying wife is tempered by a ghostly haunting. The first manned mission to Mars reveals a personal past for one colonist. An Indian Brave concludes a ritual as a rite of passage to adulthood. The end of the world brings a woman and her ailing father together for the last time. A man has an opportunity to right one wrong from his past and realizes the true meaning of regret. Another man's senses are replaced one by one with something alien. A golfer in the aftermath of the apocalypse sets out on a quest to keep the game he loves alive. A conversation between two sides of one man's psyche reveals something in us all. A snowbound woman holds the fate of the world literally in her hands. Once all sides of the box are revealed, the homeless man discovers the promise of a new future built on memories from a past he never had. The Box Has Twelve Sides is a collection of thirteen stories all connected as visions given to a homeless man in search of his future. I will be posting each story as a chapter every few days until all are published and the book marked as complete. Please check back and pick up the next story in the overall arc.

Elodie's life changes at the turn of a doorknob when she is forced into joining a secret organization that claims to be protecting the Earth from aliens. But with every step she takes, she finds the organization, or the facility, as they call it, becoming more and more suspicious. When a mysterious death occurs, revealing a well-concealed secret, things quickly go downhill as humanity's future is placed on the shoulders of a single gaggle of teenagers. *** I hear a sigh from the other side of the door, "Miss. Chaucer, you have a wonderful opportunity here, are you going to take it or not?" Now, I am seriously confused, "Opportunity?" She takes advantage of my befuddled state and shoves the door open. Shit. The corners of her mouth pull up, and it's so unnatural, it takes me a moment to realize she's smiling. Major plastic surgery? Probably. Click. Did she just lock the door? She locked the door! I spring towards the house phone, dusty from years of doing absolutely nothing, so I can call the police. I don't make it. Halfway there, I trip on my own pant-leg and face plant on the floor. The woman steps over me and retrieves the phone. She looks at it as if it's a foreign object, "This won't be necessary. All I want to do is talk to you." For some reason, instead of screaming, I stay silent. She smiles and pulls out a chair from the kitchen table for me to sit on. When I don't sit, she says, "If you want to know what's going on, then sit." I think about it for a moment. She hasn't hurt me yet, and I have to admit, I am quite curious as to what's going on. So, call me stupid, but I sit down. "I am from a space organization that protects civilians from . . . outside threats." *** Beautiful cover made by @mahana258! Jessica Leibniz tried to be a normal teenager, but unlike most teenagers in the 22nd century, she can tell time without a clock. So what good is a watch... unless it comes with incriminating A.I? It's part of a fashion sense that involves 1980's nostalgia, nerdom, and rebellion. Otherwise, you have a normal, nineteen-year-old delivery girl by day and freelance hacker by night. Everything else is unremarkable in a future where aliens rule the planet. After assimilation in the 21st century, which could have ended more violently, Earth has become relatively peaceful and technologically efficient, so they say. Corporations still reign supreme, except a new species sits at the top of the social ladder. These overlords have constructed a new kind of city in the web of planetwide sprawl. Eden: a modern megapolis. Jessica has learned to embrace Eden and its challenges. Without a cause, she confides in three friends or smacks into boredom. But when she seamlessly cracks an uncrackable security algorithm, nothing makes sense, and boredom gives way to danger. Hacker life takes to the streets, and beyond, in a desperate flight from the world's most powerful corporation. Faced with conspiracy, tragedy, and a new life on the run, normal is no longer an option.
