In the middle of the night, the unwilling human test subjects of the Chambers are awakened to soundless kill orders that they never remember, and cannot disobey. Seventeen-year-old Sev, however, wouldn’t know what receiving these orders was like. He’s the only subject unaffected.

He’s made it his purpose to find help, to break the spell of his companions and free them all from their unwilling duties as toy soldiers, but he must do so without revealing his secret to anyone except his closest companion, Eliza. Each failure, however, ebbs at his confidence and his memories of freedom in the world before, and the boy who resisted.

One night, his secret becomes compromised by the daughter of the very scientist controlling them. Anastasya discovers the truth, but she insists she wants to help him and the other toy soldiers to escape. All they have to do is break into her mother’s laboratory and discover her secrets.

But those secrets have a cost greater than he realized, and the game changes when he wakes up and finds himself in the last place he ever expected—a place that will make him turn on everyone, and everyone turn on him.
