"Yabbies. Funny little things, all in their own world at the bottom of the dam. A bit like us, ain't they? Can't see a thing for all the mud in the water; bits and pieces drift down, in any old order, all out of sequence, an' we have to make sense of them as best we can." This unusual novel explores ideas about sustainability from a different angle: that we can't achieve a sustainable world without a system of law that supports it. For that to happen, we would need a revolutionary change in the way we see our world: a refocus of passion from possession to purpose. In some ways, as one character explains, we may not have much choice: "The whole system is so fragile that there's a real risk it could collapse at any time, in a really big way. Those problems are inherent in the system: the whole thing is held together by little more than wishful thinking." But what if only some countries made that change, and others didn't? What would happen to trade, to international relations, to everyday living? How would they deal with business-visitors, or tourists? We see these themes through story-fragments, each piece drifting down through the waters of time, each character describing their own worlds and experiences in their own unique voice. After the Third World War, in 2026, Earth experienced what the people called, "the Great Calamity". this world wide disaster destroyed much of the worlds nations, but leaving North America and the Caribbean. left with no choice what was left of the old world went into isolation. after years of fighting in North America, the United States Of America was left, the sole surviving nation of the old world. with what technology they had, the US has vowed to keep the memory of the old and free the new of lies. and there's nothing to stop them from doing it. (A/N: Everyone thank Wattpad Sokal7 for helping me bring back this story. It took a very long time, but I've managed to bring it back. I made some changes but almost all of it is the same.) ========== Summary: What if during the 'War for Independence', instead of just 13 colonies choosing to secede from the British Empire, it was ALL the colonies of British North America that chose to fight for their independence. After winning their independence, the colonies would band together and unite to form the United States of Canada. Throughout its history, the USC has fought for its own existence in multiple wars and their actions have changed the course of human history. Despite all the faults and setbacks, the nation was forced to endure, the USC stands as one of the major superpowers in the world. However, everything changes when a GATE like structure appears and out came a roman like army. After eliminating the invaders and going to a world of fantasy, the USC soon encounter another GATE structure and are shocked to learn that it leads to a Parallel Earth, one with a radically different history. After encountering the JSDF, the people of the parallel Earth are soon in for a shock when they meet their alternate counterparts, especially the Parallel Americans.
