Fifth Street has always been a safe-haven from the world, for those who have lost their way in life and desire either comfort or an end to all vitality. Years later, when he returns from a trip, his nightmares and reality suddenly come true. He meets Emily Church, a mysterious girl who has even stranger powers and looks just like Simon. It isn't until the point that Simon realizes that Death wants his soul that Emily tells him the truth about everything; who he is, what happened to his parents, and why he must die.
