Four months after the tragic car accident that killed their parents, 17-year-old Elena and Ellie Gilbert and their 15-year-old brother, Jeremy, are still adjusting to their new reality. Ellie and Elena have always been star students: beautiful, popular, and involved with their friends and school. But now they're finding themselves struggling to hide their grief, especially Ellie.
After all, it's her fault they died. Ellie and Elena manage to find some sort of comfort in their familiar social circle. Ellie's best friend, Bonnie; her twin, Elena; and frenemy Caroline become close as they deal with it together.
But Jeremy is on a dangerous path, hanging out with the stoners and using drugs to hide his pain. As the first day of high school begins, Ellie and her friends are fascinated by the handsome and mysterious new student, Stefan Salvatore.
