Nazi'nin çocukları Federal ve Demokratik Almanya, Nazi öldükten sonra başkaları tarafından evlatlık edinmişti. Federal Almanya ABD tarafından, Demokratik Almanya ise SSCB tarafından evlatlık edindi. İkisine de başka bir isim verdiler; Federal'e "Batı", Demokratik'e "Doğu" dediler. Doğu Almanya yaşamını normal bir şekilde devam ettirirken, Batı Almanya ise ailesiyle alakalı rüyalar görüyordu ve düşüncelere dalıyordu.

Kitabın ileriki bölümlerde fark edilir ki Almanya genetik, kader, soy gibi kavramları sorgulamaya başlar. Bunlar Almanya'nın hayatını mı belirliyordu? Kaderi aslında ailesinin elinde miydi? Ya da onlarla aynı kaderi mi paylaşacaktı?
