Avery always knew who she wanted to be. Then her heart gets in the way. So she guards it. She becomes even more focused on her photography career than ever. Her sister falls victim to a stalker, and is forced home to her family after four years under the protection of Cannon PD, and Detective Paxton Branch. With Paxton comes nephew, Firefighter Matthew Fiercano. Avery doesn't want to be restricted to a house she doesn't want to be in, especially not under the circumstances. As the summer drags on and the danger gets more intense, Avery starts to see a change in herself. But she only has until September until she moves to NYC. Yet, her past isn't as far away as she seems, and with her emotionally stability on the verge of snapping, she's in danger of ruining any chance she may have at a future.

Clayton Colter wasn't as bad as he seemed. He has a fantastic family, loves his job, and he's also an ex-Marine. As the oldest of six brothers, Clayton was used to putting out fires, scolding his siblings, and rescuing them from themselves. Still, he wouldn't have it any other way. Stevie Whitley couldn't understand where she'd gone wrong. She has good parents, a job that she'd fought hard for, and was a decent person on top of it all. Nevertheless, when it's still not enough, she finds herself in the town of Carmel Springs, determined to pick up the pieces. When Clayton finally gets struck by lightning, it's anyone's guess at what will happen next.
