The little town of Silva Montes is known by the outside world as a quiet vacation spot for the elderly and couples wanting to get away from their rowdy children. Nothing that happens in Silva Montes attracts much outside attention (except for that one-time Jason Mars won $10,000 in a short story writing contest.) But for several weeks, the town of Silva Montes had everyone's attention. No one expected it. No one wanted it. The little town on the coast was not prepared for the events that were about to take place.

Open Novella Contest 2024 writing prompt #83: Earth's climate is becoming increasingly inhospitable. Humans have located another planet to live on, but there's not enough room on the spacecrafts for everyone. Who stays and who goes? One wrong question has the power to condemn . Following the Martian discovery of a jump drive, the United Nations of Earth formulated a plan. There is a rumored list of seventeen crimes - modeled after the nineteen crimes that could get one sent to Australia. It seems a very similar one would get white collar corporate criminals, fringe political activists, terrorist operatives, bigots and climate law violators sent to Mars. Publicly, it's all denied. Then Brie Reyes (nee Hodges), finds herself arrested after a contentious briefing with the United States Climate Initiative Czar. Researching her absent father - who long ago left to be among the first settler of the Martian colony Selah - caused a cataclysmic shift in her life and her thinking. Meeting the half-brother born to her father after he settled on Mars may either bring her salvation or condemnation. Either way, Brie Reyes is going to Mars. Its either as a political prisoner. Jace Summers is someone who is always true to himself no matter what anyone else thinks of him, and he's proud of who he is. He has pastel pink hair, stunning deep brown eyes, and a sweet and silky voice that makes all of the girls swoon. Too bad he's gay though. He has been out since seventh grade and is thankful he has never gotten hate for it, not that it would have bothered him anyway. Alec Walker is someone who everyone knows and likes, though he doesn't consider himself to be one of the popular kids. He has brown hair, hazel eyes with the perfect mix of brown and green, and his side profile could make angels swoon. Neither of those two boys seem very different from each other, both are kind, well-liked, and very handsome. Even if they aren't friends, you wouldn't expect them to dislike each other. Well, sadly that is incorrect. Ever since they can remember, they have each hated each other with a burning passion. Jace thinks Alec is a jackass know-it-all, and Alec thinks Jace is annoying and throws his personality in everyone's faces. Those seem like very small or petty things that they could easily overcome by having a conversation, but both are too stubborn for that. It is a mutual hate that neither will give up. But when one day they get news that seems like the end of the world... it turns out to be the best thing that has happened to both of them. Ilory Benson was an uninteresting introverted person, who didn't care about fitting anywhere but her little apartment, or in her books. Especially, in her well-respected family, and not many people knew the fact that she was the youngest daughter of a known personality in the Political World, now the Vice President of the US. People never bothered getting to know her and she didn't care, she was always behind the curtains and off the screen, while her four siblings were just as successful as her parents. Most of the time llory was invisible to people, but there was one particular person who avoided her like sugar on a diet. Her brother-in-law, Emmanuel Savelli. She had never let people's behaviour bother her, but if she could come close to hating anyone that would be him. Therefore, when a call in the middle of the night had her rushing to Washington she was in shock, the place and people she left for her peace of mind were now calling her. But this return brought a whole lot of responsibilities and immediate decisions. One of them particularly concluded on marrying Emmanuel which was also her sister's dying wish. To step in for the sixteen months old baby her sister left behind, after suffering because of Cardiovascular Disease.
