Nearly arrested several times, often lost (sometimes on purpose), and dealing with unconscious travellers, lost luggage, delayed connections and even a lorry load of spilled toilet rolls, travelling has given me a plethora of experiences. Combine that with a slightly neurodiverse approach to life in general, a dyslexic understanding of signage and whatever else life seems to throw at me I don't think I've ever had a dull trip. But one wonderful constant is people. There's usually someone around who will help the occasionally lost and confused, and I thank all of them for helping navigate me through many different countries and trips. Now, where was I? Ah yes. Slightly lost...

My escape from Springfield, Massachusetts, came in the form of an exchange program to New Delhi, India, one plane ticket for 11:00 am on the thirteenth of July. I left, taking a big suitcase and my camera. I told myself I left for the experience I'd have there, but maybe I left because of the experience I'd had here. I don't know. All I know is that I left, and then I met Maya Sumedh. Luke Waters came into my life at 12:00 pm on the fourteenth of July, a Saturday. Probably the weirdest Saturday of my life - I picked up a cute guy from the airport, was in a car crash and stayed up the whole night talking to said cute guy. Maybe I even fell in love but I didn't know it until much later. All we had was four months and camera. A camera which proved more important than we ever imagined.

Miami, Hawaii, Bahamas, Bora-Bora... "There must be a way to visit all these exquisite places besides in my dreams", thought Ann obsessively, during her last year of college. And indeed, she finally found one, despite her meager means, being born in a modest family, in a former communist country. 22 years old, with the college graduation out of the way, she applied for a job on cruise ships, halfway across the globe, in the sunny, exotic Caribbean Sea. It was just a waitressing job for which she had to leave everything behind... her family, her friends, her entire way of life up until then. Even her higher education was useless in this new endeavor of her life, but what else was there? Her wish was to travel, to see the world, to experience new cultures and being poor was not going to stop her. Little did she know about how excruciating would be to adjust to the life onboard, as part of a crew made of 1000 people from 77 different countries. 77 different cultures, traditions and customs, trying to make it work while sharing tiny, petty living quarters, in a prison like décor, located under the sea level, while working around the clock to create a dream vacation for thousands of rich, spoiled passengers. Shortly, the notion of cultural differences turned into a cultural abyss, but Ann finally discovered that the only two things uniting people across the globe are love and danger.

In 2017 I embarked on a three month backpacking trip around Europe. Motivated by the many accounts of travel from within religion, I went to learn. But what I experienced was not what I was expecting. This was my first time leaving the UK since I was a child and my expectations of travel and Europe were wildly out of touch. I met more people in these three months than I had in the previous ten years and had many new experiences. I was naive and many of the people I met on my travels could tell just how naive I was. Overland by bus, train and ferry through 17 countries: England, Scotland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy and Switzerland. To 35 locations: Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Paris, Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Amsterdam, Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, Frankfurt, Prague, Krakow, Brno, Bratislava, Vienna, Budapest, Timisoara, Sibiu, Brasov, Bucharest, Sofia, Thessaloniki, Litochoro, Athens, Delphi, Naples, Rome, Venice, Milan and Lugano. It is an account of backpacking around Europe, both the best and worst of European backpacking hostels. Long bus journeys, hitch hiking and plenty of walking. I'm not proud of my behaviour or the events surrounding this three month period of my life, but I am proud to have forced myself to do it. I hope that my story will reach people who are in similar positions to what I found myself and to plant the seed of travel as a solution to those problems. Sometimes running away is the solution. It has also been several years since my backpacking trip and I find myself constantly trying to piece my memories together. Not always knowing what city or even country a memory occurred. I feel like my memories are deteriorating so I decided to document them before fall apart completely. I'm not a writer at all and I have tried to be as honest as possible, to my own downfall. I'm open to any advice about how I can improve it.

This is actually written for my Great Uncle Atty. Pio Frago to read. We live in two different parts of the world, and this is my way to reach him. It is also a collection of stories I wrote to keep my (virtual ticket) going per se! As a baby, I was personified as the little girl who 'cried' around the world by an airplane passenger in Hawaii. And in a way, I still like to get my 'voice' heard, but now through words in a story and my poetry. So, if you are willing to join me for a 'virtual ride' to a place I call my own, please do. My Grandpa passed away on Aug. 15, 2017.
