Test day. The day we knew was coming and had been dreading the most. Today is the end of what we have known and the beginning of the unknown. We will be tested, graded, and shipped off to where our tests assign us. There is no freedom of choice, no independence, and nothing to look forward to. All of us have been together since the beginning and can remember the good ol' days of playing outside, dressing how we wanted, and being free to be who we were and wanted to be without having to worry about getting shot because of it. What I remember most is going to the library and having the ability to choose whatever book we wanted to and in those days there were too many books to choose from. Those days are long gone. The ruling government now makes all our choices for us. The freedom of everything was taken away along with all of our rights, until today. We are ready to fight back and take control of our country for our generation and those that follow. We may be 14 years old, but we have a mission and that mission is to fight for and regain the freedoms that were lost. Today is the beginning of the unknown.

The first boy and girl born gets the number one, they are projected to receive the best life possible. The next boy and girl get the number two, and I think it's pretty easy to guess how the rest goes. The only thing standing between the elite society and their perfect lives, is The Trial. Every year, on the first of June, everybody who has or is having their eighteenth birthday joins. It's a race to the finish line in teams of four and you could either become a higher or lower number depending on when you reach the end. This was created in hope to give those with lower numbers a chance to climb up the ranks. The Trial then developed into more. Pairs of boys and girls with numbers one through thirty live, while the others with numbers of thirty-one and beyond are purged to maintain population control. The whole camp was filling with smoke. I coughed, praying that my lungs would keep working for just a few more minutes. "Eli, which way is west?" Adam's breathing was just as labored from physical exertion, smoke, and panic as mine was. I didn't even process the question. I didn't know.
