He was tired. He felt alone. America doesn't have any close friends. He's lonely. He continues to push all his needs and any potential friends aside to continue the work for his country, and even if it's not nearly as much work as he had to do a century ago, as his kids are now grown and can do their own work, it's still tiring. His life is so boring and mundane. Well, at least it is until Russia appears in his kitchen one night.
