Turn It Off

"Turn. It. Off." My father's voice rings out against the black marble walls, echoing in my head. I feel his cool hand press against my forearm, gripping tight enough to leave a bruise. I don't blink, if I do, I'm afraid my father will only see more unwanted tears. He made me kill my own mother, and still I try to make him proud. If that's not fucked up I don't know what is. I try to swallow my emotions, to turn them off.
"Riddles don't cry."
Those three words were the very structure of my life, it was second nature for that line to ring out in my head anytime I felt a pang of sadness. I feel it now, pounding against my skull, a constant reminder of who I am and who I have to be. I try to turn it off. I try to shut out any negative feelings, and doubts, any sadness. I try to turn it off. Sometimes I think that I've shut out my feelings so much that soon, I won't be able to turn them back on.
