At first they don't get along because they're so different. But then they find out they both want freedom in their lives. During the summer, they become close friends and maybe something more. Rora shows Asa how beautiful farm life can be. Asa tells Rora about university and the big world outside. Both girls have to deal with what their familys want and what society expects. When summer ends, Asa has to leave for school. They write letters to each other and try to stay connected, but it's hard when they live such different lives.
