Mikey had never surfed a day in his life. That didn't stop him from grabbing a board and charging into the waves like he was born for it. His friends were still setting up snacks on the beach, unaware that Mikey was already paddling out - with no experience and definitely no supervision. The first wave knocked the wind out of him. The second dragged him under. He couldn't tell which way was up. Saltwater burned his lungs as he sank deeper, limbs flailing uselessly. Through the haze, he caught glimpses of vibrant coral, glowing softly in the ocean's filtered light. Small, curious fish circled him, their scales shimmering like fragments of a dream.
