Then, one day when they're all out fishing together, they find a boy, who had been frozen in ice with his flying bison for Avatar only knows how long. He is clearly an Airbender, and he is clearly a young boy, but he might just be more then he appears. Drin believes that his people tossed him into the water to save him from the Fire Nation's Thirst for blood. Sokka believes he's just an Airbender, who got lucky enough to survive the clear and brutal massacres of the other Airbenders. Silver and Katara both believe, that Aang the boy the Airbender who was frozen in ice could in fact be the Avatar. That the world has been waiting for 100 years for him to return, bring balance and peace back into their world.

At the age of ten, she lost her mother in a Fire Nation raid, right at the South Pole; all she has left is her mother's necklace, which Katara wears around her neck. After that, her father left to fight in the Hundred Year War, along with all the other grown warriors, and Makki and her siblings were put under the care of their Gran Gran. She grew up practicing her bending and helping Katara with all the chores, while their brother practiced his fighting skills and tried teaching the younger boys of their village. Makki's siblings followed their destiny of helping Aang master all four elements while Makki was stuck on a path with the Fire Nation Prince Zuko and his uncle Iroh. When Makki, Zuko, and Iroh became fugitives from the Fire Nation and refugees inside the Earth Kingdom, Makki had no choice but to help the lost prince find his way onto the right path.
