This story takes place after Artemis Fowl: The Opal Deception.
Artemis is still struggling with his returned memories. Wondering if becoming the good guy is the path he truly wanted or if the criminal life style is his true calling. His internal debate is interrupted when he is suddenly transported to a desolate, post apocalyptic universe where humans and the fairy people have waged war against each other. Imagine his horror when he discovers that this universe's version of himself is the cause of this war. Which begs the question, where is this version of Artemis Fowl?
